The SUNSET CENTER is the gathering place of Carmel and houses a wide variety of cultural events including the world famous Carmel Bach Festival, the Monterey County Symphony. The Center is the home of Performance Carmel. Founded in 1910, the city-owned FOREST THEATRE is truly an enchanted location. Stage and audience are surrounded by trees... Theatre-goers can picnic under the stars in front of roaring fire pits while enjoying theatrical productions. Point Lobos is visible in the distance, and waves can be heard crashing on the Beach. A summertime location for various community festivals, every fall this magnificent backdrop sets the stage for the Carmel Shakespeare Festival. On a site first established as an Arts & Crafts Clubhouse in 1907, the Pacific Repertory Theatre owned GOLDEN BOUGH PLAYHOUSE has a rich and exciting history. Its namesake originally located on Ocean Avenue burned down in 1935 after a production of "By Candlelight". Relocated and rebuilt, the second facility burned again following a production of, you guessed it, "By Candlelight". Rebuilt in 1950, the present building has stood the test of time. Live performances are also offered at the Indoor Forest Theatre 831/624- 1531, and the Cherry Foundation 831/624-7491, the former home of inventor Carl Cherry.
