Monterey Bike Path
Stretch out for a good long ride. Start in Seaside by the Embassy Suites
and take the bike path to Monterey. Detour into Old Monterey to see the gardens and take the walking tour. Shop
and people watch at Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row where numerous
stores rent bikes and surreys, too. Be careful steering through the
pedestrians who will insist on walking in front of your bicycle.
Pass beach scenes, ocean bird life etc. Stop for refreshments
and, if the waves are big, to watch the surfers and scuba divers at Lover's Point in
Pacific Grove. Make a left away from Lover's Point, and hang out in
downtown PG for a while. And/or, take the bay-side road to Asilomar
Beach. At Asilomar Beach, lock up your bike and take the wooden walk way
around the beautiful Pebble Beach golf course Spanish Bay. It's a sandy
surfing beach there. Plant types are marked.
Back on the bike, go up the hill and stop for a snack at the Fishwife, or
go on to Pebble Beach if you are really fit. Bikes get in through the gate
free (cars cost $5), but bikers sign a liability waiver. Keep going past
all of the gorgeous sights and very steep hills until you get to Carmel.
It's a long ride back now. Get a
